October on the Waterfront
The heat has finally broken and we can all start to enjoy sweaters and pumpkin-flavored food again! Halloween is just around the corner, but I can't find information about the parade, yet. I'll update when I do!
Catoberfest and Spirit of Beacon
Thanks to September showers, both Catoberfest and the Spirit of Beacon Day have been moved to Sunday the 4th.
Start the day at the Spirit of Beacon opening ceremonies at 11am. The parade starts at 1pm at Polhil Park at the west end of Main street. There should be lots of interesting stalls on Main Street to peruse, and then, at the other end of Main Street, a bit later...
Catoberfest will be at Hudson Valley Brewing from 3-7:30 with food and music to benefit Mid Hudson Animal Aid, a no-kill, free-range sanctuary here in Beacon.
The Beacon Sloop Club's Annual Pumpkin Festival
The Beacon Sloop Club is throwing its Annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 18 at Pete & Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park. The club's riverfront celebration runs two stages of live music, kids activities, and pumpkin pie, with the chance to sail on the club's sloop the Woody Guthrie.

DIRT: The Secret Life of Soil
Arm-of-the-Sea's big-puppet science show is the festival's marquee theatrical offering. DIRT takes audiences on a journey into "the Great Underneath" — the alchemy of plants, the dance of fungi, and the labors of soil microbes — with puppet figures from 12 inches to 12 feet tall and live music.
ONE BLUE SKY
Also from Arm-of-the-Sea, this 55-minute puppet-and-mask production — inspired by American folk singer Pete Seeger, a fitting nod to the festival's Seeger Riverfront home — tells the mythic journey of a girl searching for her missing mother, accompanied by a reluctant elephant, a vigilant crow, and a dancing Pie Seller. Appropriate for ages 7 and up, it plays 4pm. The production, backed in part by the Jim Henson Foundation and the NYS Council on the Arts, is listed here.
The 3rd Annual Newburgh Porchfest
Just across the river, Newburgh turns its porches into stages on Saturday, October 3, noon to 6pm. Porchfest is a free community music festival, part of a movement of 260+ self-organizing porchfests worldwide, where dozens of front porches become stages and local musicians perform, "making live music accessible to ALL Newburghers." The historic Crawford House porch serves as the anchor stage throughout the day. Check social media as the date approaches for the porch map. @newburghporchfest on Instagram
