Who was Patanjali, and why does his name sit at the root of everything we call “yoga” today? In this workshop, we’ll trace the story of this half-legendary sage — part scholar, part serpent, part myth — and the text attributed to him that has shaped the tradition for over two thousand years: the Yoga Sūtras. We’ll look at what the Sūtras actually represent within the broader landscape of yoga — not a manual of postures, but a map of the mind, offering a clear and rigorous path toward clarity, stillness, and freedom. Understanding even a handful of its core teachings changes how we show up on the mat and in our lives — giving us language and orientation for the parts of practice that asana alone doesn’t touch. Together we’ll explore: Patanjali’s story — who he was, and the mythology that surrounds him Seven essential sūtras — teachings you can carry directly into your daily practice Chanting practice — an introduction to the sound and rhythm of the text itself You’ll walk away with a working knowledge of the Yoga Sūtras’ place in the tradition, seven touchstone teachings to return to on and off the mat, and a felt experience of chanting as a practice in its own right — the beginning of a relationship with this text that can deepen for years to come. No prior study needed — just an interest in the roots of the practice you already love.
