A Marine wrote a book called JOAN. It comes out on the twenty-fifth, and we are throwing it the kind of party the book deserves rather than the kind books usually get.
The whole downstairs becomes one room. A DJ runs the evening and the floor fills. Live musicians play over the top of him. Performers move through the crowd instead of standing on a stage. Projections cover every surface. Two cocktails are built for this night and served on no other. Somewhere in the middle of it, Dexter reads.
The book is arranged in four volumes and it goes at everything at once: the Marine Corps, a marriage, a divorce, motherhood, and the women who came before her. Its title poem wants a different saint. Not the one in the stained glass. The one the drinkers and the smokers and the fighters actually pray to.
Come dressed like you mean it.
Put your armor on.
